Abstract
Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) - as integrations of computation, networking and physical processes - are becoming smarter, more automated, connected, upgradeable and collaborative. CPS provide a vast number of opportunities for innovation, and may for example help to address many of UN Sustainable Development Goals. Both technology and sustainability thus strongly require industrial transformation. At the same time, the development and life-cycle managmement of future CPS clearly push and challenge the boundaries of existing engineering methodologies and socio-technical frameworks; the unprecedented capabilities also represent unprecedented complexity.
Trustworthiness in particular means that the complexity of CPS needs to be manageable and that known challenges – such as the automation paradox, newer challenges – such as failure modes of AI and deep learning systems, and expanding challenges – such as those related to cyber-security and safety of open world systems, are understood and properly handled. This talk will provide the following perspectives to human centered CPS.
– trends and capabilities of future CPS, drawing upon lessons learnt from previous technological shifts,
– a complexity analysis of CPS, used to highlight bottlenecks in current (systems) engineering practices,
– directions towards trustworthy and circular CPS, including automated driving and edge computing will be taken as technological case studies for illustrative purposes.
Bio
Martin Törngren is a Professor in Embedded Control Systems at KTH since 2002. He has been a pioneer in bridging the gaps between the fields of automatic control and real-time distributed systems, with a focus over recent years particularly on architectural design, model-based engineering and safety of highly automated cyber-physical systems.Networking and multidisciplinary research have been characteristic throughout his career. He has spent several periods abroad as a visiting scholar, including 2011/12 at UC Berkeley, spring 2018 at Stevens Institute of Technology, and fall 2018 at UC Berkeley. He is the principal initiator and Director of the Innovative Centre for Embedded Systems – ICES - a KTH-industry competence network launched in 2008, and will be the director for the new KTH and industry center on Trustworthy Edge Computer Systems and Applications – to be launched during the spring 2020 in Sweden. Abstract
Increasing complexity and interconnectedness of today's cyber-physical systems make them more prone to attack from outside adversaries as well as disruption from internal failures. Systems engineering methods, processes and tools for ensuring the safety, reliability, and security of these systems remain stovepiped by discipline and rooted in linear cause-effect relationships that are ineffective given complexity of currrent systems and threats. Today's systems need resilience strategies that ensure safe and secure control of system behavior and availability strategies supporting mission-level needs. SERC research in Trusted Systems introduced the concept of "System Aware" resilience strategies in 2016, combining system behavioral monitoring with design of resilience modes that are enacted by behavioral anomalies. That research continues today with the development of a standard Cyber-Security Requirements Methodology (CSRM) combined with a standard Mission Aware model-based systems engineering meta-model, providing a structured approach to design in assurance in all stages of system development. This presentation will provide a history of SERC Mission Aware research, current work to standardize assurance design in MBSE tools, and a discussion of opportunities for future research. The presentation will include a demonstration of a mission aware meta-model for an example complex system-of system.
Meet Tom McDermott
Tom McDermott is the Deputy Director and Chief Technology Officer of the Systems Engineering Research Center at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. He is also a lecturer on systems thinking and leadership development in Georgia Tech’s Professional Education college. He consults with multiple organizations on enterprise modeling for transformational change through his research and consulting practice. He is the elected Director of Strategic Integration for the International Council on Systems Engineering. He has over 35 years of background and experience in technical and management disciplines, including 15 years at the Georgia Institute of Technology and 18 years with Lockheed Martin. He served as Principal Researcher, Interim Director and Director of Research of the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) from 2002 until 2018, leading a strategy of unprecedented growth (over 200% from 2008-2013) while repeatedly being named one of Atlanta’s best places to work. Prior to GTRI, he spent 18 years with Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company, serving as Product Team Lead and Division Manager for Lockheed Martin’s F-22 Raptor Avionics Team. He successfully led the F-22 Avionics team to Raptor #4004 avionics first flight in January 2001.
Meet Peter Beling
Dr. Peter A. Beling is a Professor of Systems Engineering at the University of Virginia (UVA). In addition, Dr. Beling serves as a SERC Research Council member, providing guidance in the Trusted Systems research area. Dr. Beling’s research interests are in the area of decision-making in complex systems, with emphasis on adaptive decision support systems and on model-based approaches to system-of-systems design and assessment. His research has found application in a variety of domains, including mission-focused cybersecurity, reconnaissance and surveillance, prognostic and diagnostic systems, and financial decision making. He directs the UVA site of the Center for Visual and Decision Informatics, a National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center, and the Adaptive Decision Systems Laboratory, which focuses on data analytics and decision support in cyber-physical systems. Dr. Beling has served as editor and reviewer for many academic journals and regularly serves as a panel member for the National Research Council and the National Science Foundation. Dr. Beling received his Ph.D.in operations research from the University of California at Berkeley.

SERC TALKS: “How Can We Systems Engineer Trust into Increasingly Autonomous Cyber-Physical Systems?”

Abstract
One of the primary inhibitors of trust in autonomous and cyber-physical systems is the likelihood that any such computer-based systems may be infiltrated and manipulated by a malicious entity. We can systems engineer trust into such systems if we start with an in-depth understanding of the mathematical structure of the hardware and software. We then can migrate the computing from register-based CPUs with operating systems to pure dataflow based networked computing. Internal self-knowledge and constraints then can be trusted to limit autonomy and to protect cyber-physical systems from operating outside of the specified physical envelope. This talk will review the mathematics and provide a perspective of networked computing for the emerging discipline of cyber-physical systems engineering.
Bio
Dr. Joseph Mitola III is a Fellow of the IEEE, Chief Technologist of the ENSCO Aerospace Sciences and Engineering Division (ASE). With over 15,000 citations in Google Scholar, Dr. Mitola is recognized globally for his seminal contributions to Software Defined Radio (SDR) and Cognitive Radio. His career has included years with the US DoD, ITT Corp, E-Systems (now Raytheon), Harris Corp, The MITRE Corporation, an Artificial Intelligence Startup company, Stevens Institute of Technology and Virginia Tech. He has served as program manager at DARPA and as Special Assistant to the Director of DARPA and US Special Operations Command for the Global War on Terror. For the past decade he has focused on hardware-defined cybersecurity. At ENSCO ASE he supports the US Space Force as Chief Cyber Architect for the Ranges and Networks Systems Engineering and Integration program.
