Congratulations to SERC Researchers Mr. Tom McDermott and Ms. Molly Nadolski, Stevens Institute of Technology, who have just published an article in INCOSE’s INSIGHT Practitioners Magazine.
The article, “To Get Systems Engineers Interested in Social Dimensions, Give Them a Social Optimization Problem”, was published in the September 2021 issue of insight (Volume 24, Issue 3). The article provides recommendations on how systems thinking approaches can be used to explore and optimize societal issues in systems engineering. McDermott and Nadolski present a case study where in students used formal models of non-traditional socio-economic variables to optimize sustainability and resilience, showing the benefits of both modeling in systems engineering and utilizing systems thinking tools to explore complex problems.
