The SERC would like to congratulate Dr. Azad Madni (University of Southern California), who is one of the recently elected members to the National Academy of Engineering. Dr. Madni has been an active member of the SERC since its founding. He has led numerous research tasks and workshops and continues to serve as a pioneer in the field of transdisciplinary systems engineering. His research focuses on intelligent systems, distributed autonomy, formal and probabilistic methods, and machine learning in complex systems modeling. Most recently Dr. Madni has joined the SERC’s research council to help define the future direction of the SERC.
Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to “engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature” and to “the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.” Election of new NAE members is the culmination of a yearlong process.
The citation for Professor Madni reads: “For advances in low-cost simulation-based training using interdisciplinary model-based approaches.”
