This talk by Myron Hecht of The Aerospace Corporation describes how MBSE (and SysML in particular) can support and enable certification, starting by identifying the potential benefits of MBSE for certification; describing specific approaches to support certification; and concluding with necessary conditions regarding MBSE capabilities within both the applicant development organization and the certification authority, establishment of ground rules, and an executable certification plan.

Speaker: Mr. Myron Hecht, Senior Project Leader at The Aerospace Corporation

Abstract
This talk describes how MBSE (and SysML in particular) can be used to support and enable certification. We start by identifying the potential benefits of MBSE for certification including complexity management, certification authority-applicant communication, and ease of revision. We then describe three specific approaches to support certification: requirements traceability, profiles, and formal model. We conclude with necessary conditions including MBSE capabilities within both the applicant development organization and the certification authority, establishment of ground rules, and an executable certification plan.
Biography
Myron Hecht is a Senior Project Leader at The Aerospace Corporation, where he specializes in model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and in reliability, safety, and systems engineering for satellites, ground control systems, and other complex weapons systems. He also is a consultant to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in reactor safety and control systems and a lecturer at the UCLA School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, where he teaches reliability and MBSE. He has authored more than 100 refereed publications in model-based systems engineering, reliability, safety, products liability, software reliability, and fault tolerant systems. He was a member of the RTCA SC 205 committee and wrote sections of RTCA 178C and 278A on requirements for safety critical software in civil aircraft and ground systems and the IEEE 7-4.3.2 on software in nuclear reactor safety systems. He is currently a member of the IEEE P1633 committee on software reliability and the Object Management Group Risk Assessment Modeling Language (RAAML). Myron holds a B.S. in chemistry, an M.S. in nuclear engineering, an M.B.A., and a J.D. degree, all from UCLA.
