Major General Bedke capped his Air Force career with appointments as commander of the Air Force Flight Test Center and the Air Force Research Laboratory, following other distinguished appointments stateside and abroad. After graduating from the Air Force Academy, he served as a command pilot with more than 4,300 flying hours in 80 different aircraft. As an experimental test pilot, he commanded the 31st Test and Evaluation Squadron at Edwards Air Force Base, and he also led a B-52 operations group, a flying training wing, and a B-52 bomb wing.
