SERC Research Network Adds University of Michigan and Colorado State

Oct 6, 2025

The Systems Engineering Research Center (SERC) welcomes the University of Michigan and Colorado State University into its network of collaborator universities. The expansion supports the SERC national network’s distinction of providing federal defense partners with strategically placed resources to address their most pressing challenges.

“We are thrilled to add these two outstanding universities,” said SERC Deputy Chief Technology Officer Dr. Valerie Sitterle. “Their strengths and perspectives across systems engineering, computer and data science, and foundational disciplines that provide the basis for understanding complex acquisition challenges complement and augment the SERC extraordinarily well.”

With their focus on pioneering research and real-world impact, both the University of Michigan and Colorado State University share SERC’s commitment to develop the next generation of systems, talent, and technology.

“We are honored to join the SERC network, contributing our strengths in applied systems engineering research to tackle the nation’s most complex engineering challenges,” said Tom Bradley, Head of CSU’s Department of Systems Engineering. “Together, I expect us to accelerate the development of advanced digital methods and tools that will deliver effective solutions for national security.”

SERC was established in 2008 as the first networked University-Affiliated Research Center (UARC), gradually growing to include the more than twenty current university members that each offer significant research capabilities. The ability to periodically adjust the network based on changing university programs and critical faculty ensures a productive and dynamic network, as faculty frequently move to other programs and research interests. SERC experts work with federal defense entities to conduct sponsored research tasks applying digital engineering, test and evaluation, architecting, AI, and other tools to develop adaptable and scalable solutions.

The annual SERC Research Review (SRR) showcases funded SERC research projects from across the collaborator network and fosters vigorous discussions on trends in systems engineering. This year’s 17th annual SRR will take place on November 19-20 at the National Press Club in Washington, DC and gather academic experts, government sponsors, and industry innovators from across the nation.

“The SRR highlights how the SERC network’s projects advance the U.S. government’s development and delivery of systems,” said Dr. Sitterle. “Importantly, we spark impactful dialogue among stakeholders who aren’t usually in the same communication circles, which helps us all define what comes next.”
