SoSECIE: Mission Engineering
Tuesday, May 16, 2017 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm EDT
The Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Systems Engineering (DASD(SE)) hosts the System of Systems Engineering Collaborators Information Exchange (SoSECIE) which is a web-based seminar series typically held once or twice a month from 11 am – Noon, Eastern Time. Members of the defense acquisition community from government, industry, and academia are invited to hear these free presentations on a wide range of relevant system of systems engineering topics.
The topic for the seminar on May 16th,2017 is “Mission Engineering” and will be presented by Mr. Robert Gold, Director, Engineering Enterprise.
Abstract: Mission engineering is the deliberate planning, analyzing, organizing, and integrating of current and emerging operational and system capabilities to achieve desired warfighting mission effects. Mission engineering considers the end to-end-mission as the “system” in which individual systems are components. It goes beyond just sharing data to consider functions and the strategy for trades, tools, cross-cutting functions, and other aspects of developing a system or system of systems.
ODASD(SE) hosted a series of roundtables with engineers from the Services, DoD agencies, and industry to share mission engineering questions and develop recommendations for the acquisition community. This brief presents the results of these exchanges, including challenges and issues the group identified as well as potential benefits, outcomes, and recommendations to improve mission engineering in defense acquisition.
Biography: Mr. Gold serves as Director of the Engineering Enterprise within ODASD(SE). A member of the Senior Executive Service, he is responsible for systems engineering-related policy and guidance, specialty engineering, engineering tools and environments, hardware and software assurance, and defense standardization. He oversees workforce development for the defense acquisition engineering career fields of Engineering (ENG) and Production, Quality and Manufacturing (PQM). His specialty engineering responsibilities include reliability and maintainability, system safety, manufacturing, human systems integration, and the DoD Value Engineering program. During his career, Mr. Gold has also developed policy and proposed legislation in the areas of software and space acquisition, and he has initiated efforts to update defense software training and to revise the Information Technology career field.
The goal of this series, held in association with the National Defense Industrial Association’s SoS Engineering Committee, is to provide guidance, education, and training for SoS and dissemination of engineering best practices.
