NASEM: Virtual STEM Town Hall w/ Department of Defense

Wednesday, March 23, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm EDT

  • « Lifecycle Modeling Organization’s Model-Based Systems Engineering Conference (MBSE-CON)
  • Conference on Systems Engineering Research | CSER 2022 »

Building Research Partnerships between the Department of Defense University Affiliated Research Centers and HBCUs/MIs

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) invites you to join a virtual town hall to hear an overview of Department of Defense University Affiliated Research Centers (UARCs). The town hall will be led by the Office of the Secretary of Defense and will include speakers from DoD UARC sponsors, along with leadership from UARCs and Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Institutions (HBCUs/MIs). The town hall will describe the research areas for the DoD’s 14 UARCs and highlight the opportunities for establishing long-term, strategic research partnerships with HBCUs/MIs.

As those familiar with the Systems Engineering Research Center (SERC) are aware, UARCs are research organizations within a university or college established to provide or maintain essential engineering, research, and/or development capabilities through a long-term, strategic relationship with DoD. Each UARC has areas of expertise identified as core competencies that it must provide as part of its mission to support DoD.

This event is one in a series of town halls NASEM is conducting in collaboration with Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) to (1) promote the findings of the 2019 National Academies report, Minority Serving Institutions: America’s Underutilized Resource for Strengthening the STEM Workforce, (2) hear how HBCUs/MSIs are working to advance STEM workforce preparation, education, and research capacity, and (3) foster new discussions and solutions around these issues.

This event is supported by the Department of Defense HBCU/MI Program. The audience will have an opportunity to engage through moderated Q&A throughout the meeting. The agenda will be made available in the next few weeks.
