AI4SE & SE4AI Workshop 2026

New Submission Option and Opportunity to Contribute to Systems Engineering Journal Special Issue

The Systems Engineering Research Center and U.S. Army DEVCOM Armaments Center are pleased to invite submissions for the seventh annual AI4SE & SE4AI Research and Application Workshop planned for September 22-23 and hosted by The George Washington University Trustworthy AI Initiative in Washington, DC.

This year, three types of submissions are welcome:

• paper presentations, which will be given traditional speaking slots
• insight sessions, where practitioners can share new challenges they are encountering and/or trends they are seeing in their domains
• demo or poster sessions, where participants can share the state-of-the-art in an interactive format

Submission Guidelines

For the first time, this year, the workshop will collaborate with INCOSE’s Systems Engineering journal on a special issue. Abstracts submitted in the presentation track will automatically be considered for an invitation to submit to the special issue. The special issue will have a due date during the workshop week, when full journal-quality papers will be considered through an expedited peer-review process, with a target publication date in Winter 2026/Spring 2027.

Workshop Theme

This year’s conference theme – “Speed and Innovation through AI4SE & SE4AI” – aims to emphasize the importance of sound systems engineering to both deliver mission capabilities quickly and effectively and transform enterprises to leverage the power of AI. As in the past, the workshop will be organized around SE4AI and AI4SE.

The SE4AI track focuses on leveraging systems engineering principles and methodologies to develop safe, robust, and efficient AI systems that augment operational capabilities, while extending and advancing these principles and methodologies in response to the nature of AI enabled systems.

Specific research areas in this track include but are not limited to:

• AI embedded in complex systems of systems (SoS) and/or teams
• Measures of trust that include a recognition of human and technology interaction, including studies on explainability, interpretability, and related AI-ilities
• Test and Evaluation (T&E) of AI enabled, and hybrid human-AI systems across the lifecycle
• System design processes that support AI across the lifecycle, including AI maintenance and sustainment principles and practice
• Bidirectionality in human-AI collaborative systems
• Critical aspects of safety, reliability, and ethical considerations in developing and deploying AI systems
• Architectures for AI in systems workflows

The AI4SE track delves into the application of AI in support of the acquisition process, by enabling enhanced decision-making, optimization, validation, and verification, and alleviating mundane tasks.

Specific research areas in this track include but are not limited to:

• Evolving role of digital transformation and its impact on the workforce, fostering skill development and adaptation in an AI-driven landscape
• Agentic AI and workflow integration
• AI and cognitive assistants to support tasks from inference, decision-support and requirements trades to project management
• AI-enabled modeling and simulation
• AI-integrated digital twins

Submissions targeted at workforce upskilling for both SE4AI and AI4SE are also welcome.

Paper Presentation Guidelines

Submissions must contain enough technical content for the committee to judge the quality and potential impact of the results. Files should be uploaded as a PDF.

• Title: 200-character limit
• Primary Author/Presenter: Full name, title and organization should be visible at the top of page 1.
• Additional Authors: Any additional authors and/or presenters should be listed with their organization at the top of page 1.
• Extended Abstract: 3 pages maximum
  The abstract must clearly state the objectives, methodology, expected or achieved outcomes of your research, and explain the relevance of your work to practice.
• Research Area: Indicate the specific research area (bullets listed above) you are addressing within the broad tracks of SE4AI or AI4SE.
• References: An additional PDF page may be included to contain endnote references, graphics, and links to faculty/researcher bios and curriculum vitae.

Insight Session Guidelines

Insight session submissions must state the problem being addressed and relevant to your context. Presentations selected in this track will be short – 5 minutes – focusing on the core “insight.”

• Title: 200-character limit
• All Contributors: Full name, organization, and contact information should be visible at the top of page 1.
• Description: 1-page limit
  The abstract must describe the problem being identified or solved and explain what audience members will learn from the session. The workshop organizers are not looking for publicity about a new tool; rather they want you to bring focus to important problems where others might contribute. Files should be uploaded as a PDF.
• Research Area: Indicate the specific research area (bullets listed above) that is most closely aligned with your insight.

Demo Session Guidelines

Do you have a new tool or capability to demonstrate? This year the AI4SE & SE4AI workshop will have tabletop space to accommodate demonstrations. The expectation is that attendees will be exposed to new tools and learn something about the state-of-the-art.

• Title: 200-character limit
• All Contributors: Full name, organization, and contact information should be visible at the top of page 1.
• Description: 1-page limit
  The abstract must describe what will be included in the demo, what is novel about it, and what attendees would learn from visiting your table. Files should be uploaded as a PDF.
