Objective: Improved System Engineering toolsets will be integrated in a Virtual Collaborative Environment (VCE). The toolsets will be used to develop a more effective face-to-face conferencing system that will produce effective transfer of 3D data. The data integration with the VCE will reduce the cost and schedule of systems development, while improving the means to collect and catalog T&E data. Researchers will demonstrate the effectiveness of using Virtual World (VW) technology to perform design and test efforts for a program.
Approach: Researchers will explore integrating Naval Undersea Warfare Center’s VirtualWorld environment with USMC’s Framework for Assessing Cost and Technology (FACT). Researchers will determine the availability of an API for the VirtualWorld to allow for:
Introduction of new assets into the VirtualWorld.
Modification of new assets in the VirtualWorld.
Use of the VirtualWorld to visualize design test benches and/or virtual test events.
In support of the above third bullet, researchers will gain an understanding of NAVAIR’s Architecture Management Integration Environment (AMIE) and determine an integration strategy. AMIE provides an environment for analyzing system-of-system performance, allowing integration of disparate simulations and protocols. Research will explore:
Means to provide initial conditions to a (distributed) simulation managed by AMIE.
Strategies for closing the data loop by importing artifacts from AMIE back into FACT.
